Student Academic Services’ Mission

 

 

The mission of Student Academic Services is to provide access to higher education, facilitate transition to the university environment, and assist in the development of academic and personal skills, thus promoting academic success toward graduation for a diverse student population.

Student Academic Services

 

                   

Student Academic Services is a department that combines comprehensive programs offering transition and retention services to support success and academic excellence.  These services include:  academic and personal advising, admissions and transition services, first-year orientation courses, Supplemental Workshops in Mathematics and Science, and study group assistance.

 

                   

Student Academic Services provides the following programs:

Academic Skills Center:  This program offers a wide variety of retention programs and campus support services including study skills seminars, elementary-level mathematics (ELM) preparation assistance, the Study Session program, and a tutor referral service.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP):  EOP assists students by providing comprehensive admissions and academic support services for low-income and historically disadvantaged students.  EOP students, if eligible, may be admitted to the campus program under special provisions under Title 5.  EOP provides a wide variety of services in the following areas to help you succeed at this campus:  academic and personal advising, eligibility for the EOP grant, academic orientation courses, career and post-graduate advising, and referrals to campus resources.  EOP grants are subject to all applicable rules and regulations governing the administration of student financial aid.

Summer Institute:  This academic scholars program, held annually for newly admitted freshmen, provides participants the opportunity to participate in a five-week residential program geared at helping to make a successful transition from high school to college. Applications are available in April and selection is completed in June.

Upward Bound:  This federally funded TRIO program of the U.S. Department of Education is a college preparatory program for low-income, first-generation college, high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to motivate and academically prepare junior and senior high school students from targeted local schools for admission and eventual graduation from college.  The academic outreach program and the residential summer school session at Cal Poly offer tutoring, career advising, supplemental instruction and cultural and recreational activities.

Connections for Academic Success:  In recognition of the importance of a positive first year, Connections for Academic Success (CAS) supports students in making the transition from high school to college and offers services to help plan and achieve their academic and personal goals.  CAS is a program designed to help freshmen navigate through their first two years of college,  make connections with campus resources in support of a successful start to college life, understand how to register for classes, access financial aid resources, balance academic and social activities, and acquire information about support services, such as tutoring, employment opportunities and more.

Educational Talent Search:  This federally funded TRIO program of the U.S. Department of Education is designed to assist participants in reaching a postsecondary education. Educational Talent Search serves students in grades six through twelve at targeted local middle and high schools. In addition to counseling, participants receive information about college admission requirements, scholarships and various student financial aid programs.  The following services are offered to students who participate in this program:  academic progress plans, on-line student planner, tutorial assistance/referral, parent informational workshops, pre-SAT and ACT workshops, career information workshops, student panel workshops and university campus tours.
