Cal Poly Continuing Education offers credit and noncredit programs and has oversight of the Office of Conference Services and all self-supporting instructional programs, including conferences and workshops conducted by campus institutes and centers.

The mission of Cal Poly Continuing Education is to provide high quality, educational programs and services through its programming units, Conference Services, and other areas, such as institutes and centers, as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Cal Poly Continuing Education is committed to providing a wide range of lifelong learning opportunities and services for the campus and broader community, including professional growth and personal development delivered through traditional modes of instruction, distance technologies, and client-centered conference services for on- and off-campus constituencies.

Cal Poly Continuing Education’s units directly support the institutional vision and strategic plan by offering its services to external constituencies and university staff.

Cal Poly Continuing Education Programs

The President has delegated to the Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education oversight responsibility for the university’s self-supporting instructional programs.  In the exercise of delegated oversight, the Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education shall be informed of and coordinate all self-supporting instructional programs, including those conducted by any unit, department or division of the University, and by any campus institute, center or similar unit funded through a campus auxiliary organization. See CAP Sections 943 and 944.

Academic credit and non-credit programs and courses are designed to meet expressed community educational needs and interests.  These continuing education programs, offered through Cal Poly Continuing Education, are available at times, locations and formats, convenient for the audiences for which they are intended.

Self-supporting instructional programs awarding academic credit, or Continuing Education Units (CEUs), shall be the exclusive prerogative of the University and may not be assigned or contracted to another party or organization, including an auxiliary organization. Any unit of Cal Poly offering instruction on a self-support basis must deposit revenues generated from these activities in a Continuing Education Revenue Fund account.  The Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education shall adhere to financial procedures established by the university’s Chief Financial Officer to accomplish this CSU requirement.

221.1

Academic Credit Programs

Courses offered through Cal Poly Continuing Education complement and enhance the regular offerings of the university, and meet the needs of the audiences to be served.

The content of academic credit bearing courses must be approved by the appropriate university authorities, normally a department head/chair and the dean, the Academic Senate, and a designee of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Requirements for courses that award academic credit through any Cal Poly Continuing Education unit shall be equivalent to those in the University Catalog.  Standards of performance and evaluation shall be consistent with those maintained in regular campus courses.

221.2

Non-Credit Programs

Courses, programs, and other activities may be established to offer educational opportunities where the content is of recognized value toward professional or personal development.  These non-credit programs may or may not carry continuing education units (CEU’s) as appropriate to their content and learning outcomes.

Non-credit programs and courses are reviewed following the Procedure for Review of Non-credit Programs and Courses as established by the Academic Senate, the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Undergraduate Education, and the Office of the Dean, Cal Poly Continuing Education.

222

 Programming Units

Cal  Poly Continuing Education may establish programming units, with appropriate approvals, both on- and off-campus to fulfill its roles and mission.  Programming units may consist of regional educational centers, off-campus instructional sites, or on-campus units structured to develop self-support instructional activities.

222.1

Cal Poly Continuing Education Faculty

Faculty of the university shall be consulted through their respective college dean on employment opportunities with Cal Poly Continuing Education, but are not required to accept Cal Poly Continuing Education teaching assignments.  Faculty appointments are recommended by the appropriate department head/chair and college dean.  Should regular university faculty not respond to the opportunity to teach for Cal Poly Continuing Education, Cal Poly Continuing Education is free to hire appropriately qualified adjunct faculty.

Salary calculations will be based on the California State University faculty salary schedules.

For regular faculty, an assignment is considered to be a workload in addition to that of the academic year (overtime).  No service credit will be earned toward retirement, tenure, sick leave, etc., for such assignments.

Faculty appointments for the academic credit courses will be approved by the appropriate college dean and made by the Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education.

Full-time faculty members may teach one extension course per quarter to a maximum of nine (9) equated teaching units, or the equivalent, per academic year.

223

Financial Management

The Vice President for Administration and Finance, as Chief Financial Officer of the university, has fiscal oversight responsibility for Cal Poly Continuing Education programs.

Courses, programs, and any other instructional activity financed through self-support shall have its revenues deposited and administered through a campus trust account (“Extended Education Trust Fund”), as authorized by Education Code Section 89721, exclusively for the support and development of self-supporting instructional programs.

The Cal Poly Continuing Education budget shall be developed based upon enrollment and revenue projections, and shall be included in an annual continuing education program plan.  The annual plan shall be prepared by the Cal Poly Continuing Education financial officer in collaboration with Cal Poly Continuing Education’s Director of Academic Support, Director of Academic Affairs, Director of Conference Services, and the Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education for approval by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President for Administration and Finance for inclusion in the system’s annual budget.

The Dean of Cal Poly Continuing Education monitors enrollments, revenues and expenditures, and initiates proposed budget amendments, to assure the fiscal viability of self-supporting instructional programs.

224

Special Session Credit Programs

Special Session programs provide opportunities for study outside of normal state-supported operations. During special session, time periods of varying length may be scheduled for courses.  Courses listed in the University Catalog or other courses and programs assigned to meet special needs may be offered, provided that in the judgment of the department head/chair and college dean the course or program will meet academic standards.  Academic units earned during the special sessions program count toward the residency requirements for all academic degrees and may be applied for credentials requirements provided the courses are approved for the degree and credential programs.  (Units earned as a non-matriculated Special Session student are not automatically applicable to graduate degree objectives.)  Special Session courses may lead to a degree, a certificate, or individual course units in specified academic fields.

While matriculation is not required of students wishing to enroll only for Cal Poly Open University Special Session, such students are expected to have satisfied any prerequisites for the course(s) in which they enroll.  Enrollment in Special Session does not guarantee formal acceptance to the University.

Matriculated students may take special session courses during quarters when they are not otherwise enrolled or if regular state-supported courses are not available.

224.1

Special Session Faculty

Salary calculations will be based on the California State University Special Session Salary Schedule.

Faculty appointments for Special Session will be approved by the appropriate college dean and made by the Dean of Continuing Education or the dean’s delegate.

224.2

Cal Poly Open University

Cal Poly Open University (formerly called Concurrent Enrollment) is an enrollment option by which persons who are non-matriculated University students may enroll for courses in the regular State-support educational program of the University.  Students enrolling in Cal Poly Open University must:  1) obtain the approval signatures of the instructor teaching the course and the department head/chair offering the course; and 2) meet the prerequisites of the course.  Students may not enroll in regular courses already filled to maximum size.

After being accepted to the University, but prior to matriculating, a student may submit a request to apply Cal Poly Open University course credits to a baccalaureate degree program.  Each college of the University determines the number of units earned through Cal Poly Open University that can be applied to a university degree.

A matriculated undergraduate may obtain approval to apply up to 36 academic quarter units of Cal Poly Open University coursework toward a baccalaureate degree program.

A graduate student who matriculates may obtain approval to apply up to 12 academic quarter units of Cal Poly Open University coursework taken prior to submission of a formal study plan toward the fulfillment of requirements for a graduate degree.
