UNIVERSITY ORGANIZATION AND CAMPUSWIDE RULES

POLICIES ON PUBLIC HEALTH

171

Smoking Policy

Smoking is defined as the inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying a lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, or other lighted smoking product.

In order to protect the rights of the nonsmoking community to breathe smoke-free air on campus smoking is prohibited in all campus buildings, leased space, and all State-owned passenger vehicles.  The only exceptions to this prohibition are private residences on campus.  Residence hall students should refer to the housing license and the Residence Hall handbook for specific policies.

Smoking shall be permitted in designated areas only within the instructional campus core and in the residential community.  These areas shall be identified with ash cans and waste receptacles related to tobacco shall be placed in these areas.  No smoking shall be permitted while walking outside of a designated area.  For areas outside the campus core (i.e., agricultural lands, etc.) smoking shall take place at least 20 feet from any building doors, windows, or air intakes.

University event managers and sponsors shall ensure that an area outside and away from outdoor fixed seating provided for participants and spectators shall be designated for smoking.  Communication of this policy through event promotion, programs and ticket sales is the responsibility of the hosting organization.

Effective implementation of this policy depends upon all members of the University community acting with common courtesy and sensitivity to others.  Managers are responsible for informing all employees in their charge and all newly hired employees of these policies.

Students and campus visitors shall be informed of the policy through informational campaigns and by university employees.  This policy shall be included in the University Catalog, appropriate contracts, and other information publications.

The University will support and assist employees and students who wish to stop smoking by providing referrals to smoke cessation programs.
